How We Work

1. Contact us to discuss your needs – we will assign you to one of our professional editors who best matches the manuscript needs and timeframe.

2. You will then receive a free sample edit of your first 500-1000 words (or first chapter) with your quote for services.

3. Next, simply schedule your edit, sign the contract, and pay the deposit.

4. Finally, Your editor will get to work and remain in contact during the entire editing process, before submitting your final editorial report (and marked-up manuscript if applicable).

Step 1

The “audience” read

The first read of your manuscript, we want to see your work as your audience will see it. This gives us a better sense of your voice and style, so we can work to retain it during the later edits.

Step 2

Notes and observations

After the first read, we note down any observations that stood out, such as chapters where the pacing may have felt off, plot holes, or characters we didn’t gel with since these are the likely problem areas we will refer back to later.

Step 3

The “editing” read

The second (and any subsequent) time we read through your manuscript we make corrections and suggestions in-text, using tracked changes, and comments, specifically looking at the key areas for the editing service requested.

Step 4

Compiling the editorial report

Using the original observations and the editing suggestions in-text, we compile an editorial report. It will detail the major strengths and areas for improvement, focusing on the aspects of the editing service requested. Depending on the editing type, you may also receive chapter-by-chapter feedback.

COMMON QUESTION

Aren’t line editing and copy editing the same thing?

Line editing focuses on the language and style of the text to improve the flow and clarity of the prose, addressing issues such as word choice, sentence structure, and awkward phrasing.

Copy editing focuses on the quality and effectiveness of the writing, ensuring it’s accurate, readable, consistent, and adheres to any style requirements. Technical accuracy refers to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and syntax.

TYPES OF EDITING

Manuscript Assessments

This type of edit will offer broad feedback on major strengths and areas for improvement in your plot, characters, and prose. Instead of comments and example rewrites in the manuscript, you receive an editorial report detailing those broad strokes. An editorial assessment is great for authors who are earlier in the process (messier manuscripts). It will make later developmental and line/copy editing easier, or decide if you're ready to query agents if going the traditional publishing route.

Developmental Editing

Also called content or substantive editing, development editing looks at the “big-picture” issues, such as finding plot holes and inconsistencies. We look at narrative arcs, characterization, and overall story development. You will receive a marked-up version of the original work with specific suggestions for each issue, as well as a summary of these issues in an editorial report.

Line Editing

Also called 'stylistic' editing, line editing focuses on the content and flow of your prose. While a full copy edit looks at the mechanics of writing, the line edit only considers stylistic issues like word usage, POV/tense, dialogue, and descriptive inconsistencies. A marked-up manuscript will provide suggestions and examples for re-writing, with more broad information in the editorial report.

Copy Editing

Copyediting addresses the mechanical aspects of the writing, such as grammar, punctuation, syntax, repetition, capitalization, and spelling. The aim is to help you improve readability, clarity, coherency, consistency, and correctness. You receive a marked-up version of the original work, with corrections and suggestions using tracked changes.

Proofreading

Proofreading is the last major stage of the editing process. There should be no major error or re-writing at this stage. Proofreaders inspect the document one final time, to ensure there are no obvious spelling or grammar errors. Again, you will be provided with a fully marked-up/corrected version of your manuscript, ready for the next stage of your publishing journey.
